As per the recent news, it has been seen that, there is huge increase in imported medical equipment in India whichmay hurt small scale manufacturer of the nation.
Speaking on imported medical devices, Rajiv Nath, forum coordinator, AiMeD, said, “NITI Aayog and the Department of Pharmaceuticals recognize that Indian manufacturers have a 12-15 per cent disability factor in manufacturing medical devices in India. We urge the government to neutralize this disability for reduction of medical devices imports in India as was in the case of consumer electronics, including mobile phones and even in the toy industry.
These imported medical devices will hurt the small shops. The import duty on Chinese product ranges from zero to 10 percent,the bulk of the items are in the 7.5 per cent category and one item at 25 per cent .as per analysis it been observed that Indias top 5 import sources are US. China, Germany, Netherland, Singapore. Government is taking efforts to slow down the import from China still the neighboring country is top source for import to us. The rise in imports from other countries discourages the local manufacturers. Our government push makes India “Atmanirbhar”in medical device manufacturing during pandemic. Locally manufactured masks, PPE kits, gloves were high in demand.
India majorly imports, disposable, implant, electronics & equipment, IVD reagent & surgical instrument, among these the much growth has been seen in electronics & Equipements category devices. Rajiv Nath says,” Indian government should take some serious steps towards policy decisions as it is done for consumer electronic industry & mobile phone or else India will remain the 80 percent import dependent which is high health care security risk.
